Results by geographical area

The main organizational unit used by top management for the purposes of assessing performance and strategic decisions is the geographical area. In accordance with IFRS 8, the following geographical areas were identified as being representative of the operating sectors in which the Group does business.

  • Western Europe, includes Italy, the UK and Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, Scandinavia, Baltic states;
  • Eastern Europe, includes Russia and the Asian Republics, Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and other Balkan states;
  • International, includes all the other non-European markets.
The composition and grouping of geographical Areas changed in 2010, making it necessary to reclassify 2009 data for the purposes of comparison.

Certain costs previously charged to central (corporate) departments and therefore not attributed to the Areas, were classified from 1st January 2010 onwards as costs chargeable to organizational geographical Areas. Comparative data for full-year 2009 were therefore reclassified.
Costs not attributed to Areas are mainly central (corporate) department costs and net restructuring charges, above all industrial ones.
